La Désirade, Surprising
“The Forgotten”, La Desirade, which is the oldest island in the Lesser Antilles, and as such a geological Natural Reserve, seems away from time.
Tranquility and simplicity are the characteristics of this island. Superb white sand beaches, protected by long coral reefs attract snorkelers and swimmers.
A stone throw away, discover the untouched Petite-Terre Islands, also listed as Natural Reserves.
AGOA: The Sanctuary
The Caribbean Sea is a special habitat for feeding, reproduction and migration of marine mammals. Twenty-four species have been identified in the Guadeloupe Islands waters. With the creation of AGOA Marine Mammals Sanctuary, Guadeloupe Authorities in collaboration with mainland France wanted to contribute as a model in the Caribbean region for the marine mammals’ protection and the sustainable development.
The Fishermen Festival
La Desirade lives on the fishing industry. Every year, in august, there is the fishermen festival. This celebration commemorates the fishermen lost at sea. During this celebration, the fishermen sailors are dressed up with their French Navy sailor’s uniforms and they implore the protection of the Virgin Mary, their Saint Patron and prays together that the sea is always lenient.
The River Trail
The River Trail crosses La Desirade from South to North, starting from the Souffleur beach. This walk allows the discovery of a rich flora like wild orchids, Tetramicra elegans Tolumnia urophylla, cucullata Brassavola, Epidendrum ciliare. While hiking you will also sense the presence of the Bois d’Inde Bastard, Myrcianthes fragrans.
The climb to the plateau offers beautiful views of the South coast, East to Pointe Double and West towards the Souffleur beach. The descent to the North coast is largely inside the forest, in the bed of the River essentially formed by rocky limestone where water flows into a small waterfall.
National Geological Reserve
La Desirade is a National Geological Reserve as the oldest island of the Caribbean. The fauna and flora are filled with many endemic species, like the “Tet a langle” cactus.
Iguanas
La Desirade is celebrated for its iguana population. You can see them on the beach, in the trees, on the rocks, in the gardens. The island has been declared a Natural Reserve so that they are protected by law the locals love them!
La Désirade, Fifi Beach
Fifi beach is a beautiful prestine beach with white sand countless coconut trees. The beach opens into an incredible lagoon. The Fifi beach is only located at 2 minutes from the marina.
